Last week, Morten and James of our Copenhagen office visited Shymkent, Kazakhstan to discuss bicycle urbanism with the Mayor, city staff, and the national bicycle fund, Velocity.kz.
Set in the Central European steppe, neighbouring the Tian Shan mountain range, the city has a lot of potential to develop the bicycle as an everyday transportation option. The topography, street widths, bike share scheme, and political foresight of the Mayor make for a city ready to welcome 21st-century mobility options. It is refreshing, to say the least, to meet a mayor who is pushing for greater mobility choices in such a car-dominated city.
We look forward to returning in December, when Morten will be keynote speaker at the Mayor’s Development Summit and our team will deliver an introductory workshop in bicycle urbanism to city staff.
