Copenhagenize Design Co. partnered with Santa Cruz non-profit Ecology Action to create an active transportation network plan that safely connects people to places throughout the County of Santa Cruz, California. After a multi-level analysis that looked at existing infrastructure, destinations, barriers and community feedback, the project team developed a series of implementable infrastructure recommendations that work to improve the health, equity, safety and environmental issues at hand. Furthermore, engaging the local community is one of the primary guiding principles for increasing ridership in Santa Cruz. This was done by creating a social media campaign that promoted content with the hashtag #PoweredByMe to empower citizens to use the bicycle in their day-to-day lives. This public discussion for a more bikeable Santa Cruz was carried out through the sharing of videos, graphics and posters, all while upholding social distancing guidelines to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Understanding where people live, work, shop and play is key to developing networks that work for people, no matter their mode of transportation. Through the analyses performed for the County of Santa Cruz, the Copenhagenize team is hopeful that important improvements for walking and cycling will be implemented in the region.
