The Montréal borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie  announced in June of this year their new plan, Vision Vélo, that aims to  transform the cycling network of the borough, rebuilding or implementing 155km bicycle lanes, which covers over half of the total roadway network. Connections will also be made to Montréal’s Réseau Express Vélo, a city-wide express cycling network that has begun construction this past summer.

After the death of 5 cyclists since 2011, the borough has decided to proceed with a new type of bicycle network through Vision Vélo. Impressively, within only a few short months, they have already completed a number of the most important links in the neighbourhood, including protected unidirectional bike lanes on Rue Saint-Dominique and a bidirectional protected bike lane on Avenue de Chateaubriand. These additions have been done quickly with paint and bollards and will be maintained through the snowy Québec winter season. In addition to the new facilities, micro design elements are also being implemented across the neighbourhood, including places for bicycle users to repair flat tires, rest their foot at a red light, or stay hydrated.

The Copenhagenize team commends the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie for their quick implementation of these infrastructural changes that protect, celebrate and support bicycle users of all ages and abilities, to all destinations, and through all types of weather.
