Project Summary

Four years after conducting the Desire Lines study and hosting a Master Class for city technicians, Copenhagenize returned to Lisbon for a new project. This time, we went to the Portuguese capital to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the entire cycling infrastructure network, which includes over 100 km of protected bike lanes.

Employing criteria rooted in world-class cycling infrastructure planning, we used a combination of extensive on-site observation, filming of the cycling network, and data-driven spatial analysis to assess the city's cycling ecosystem. Along with the analysis report, Copenhagenize delivered schematic solutions for typical crossings, providing the city of Lisbon with an understanding of the current situation and precise tools to address identified shortcomings.

This analysis will enable the city of Lisbon to reflect on the state of its cycling network and to plan on how to improve connections (missing links), services to the major destinations, and overall design standards. The project also included in-person and online workshops with local technicians, which served as an opportunity to provide capacity-building in terms of best-practice cycling infrastructure, and to work concretely to solve problematic intersections.
