Project Summary

Supported by the Handshake project which aims at fostering knowledge-sharing between the most bicycle-friendly European cities, Bruges mandated a team of designers including Copenhagenize, the renowned landscape architects from West8 and the engineers from Vectris, to define a bicycle ring road around the medieval city. From the beginning of the project, a larger discussion was launched on the amelioration of the entire bicycle network, its hierarchy, its connections and ways of attracting all types of new bicycle users (children, cargo bikes, e-bikes).

This debate took place during days of work bringing together cycling mobility experts from Flanders, Denmark and the Netherlands. A day of workshops also brought together close to a hundred local residents, who shared their ideas and experiences in the city. The project ended with the elaboration of an ambitious strategy published in the form of a brochure produced by Copenhagenize.
